Experts of Grabar Centre are restoring 19th-century lantern found in Church of St. Euthymius in Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery

Interesting work is being carried in the restoration workshops of the All-Russian Art Research and Restoration Centre named after Academician I.E. Grabar – a 19th-century lantern from the collection of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve is being restored in its Kostroma’s branch.

The lantern was found in the Church of St. Euthymius built in 1653. According to the employees of the centre, when the exhibit was brought for restoration, it was damaged; there were thin places, cracks and fractures of the paint layer. The author’s gold was coated with later gilding that sometimes overlapped the painting. The metal candlestick inside the lantern was covered with wax and soot and was slightly attacked by corrosion.

Alexander Rybtsov, fine art restorer of the Kostroma’s branch of the All-Russian Art Research and Restoration Centre named after Academician I.E. Grabar, is working on this article now. You can see him in the posted pictures. He will strengthen the structure of the lantern, the gesso and the paint layer; will remove surface contamination, later overpainting and oil varnish; will make up for the lost details of wooden carving and metal decoration and will replace damaged glasses.

The restored article will be presented at the exhibition marking the centenary of the foundation of the centre.
