On the threshold of very significant anniversaries celebrated in the Kirillo-Belozersky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve (the 620th anniversary of the foundation of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and the 590th anniversary of the death of its founder - St. Kirill Belozersky), museum director Mikhail Sharomazov together with Oleg Vasiliev, Deputy Governor of the Vologda region, and Natalya Sheredega, head of the Department of Old Russian Art in the State Tretyakov Gallery, held a press-conference in the Vologda Regional Information Centre. The point in question was collaboration of the Vologda region, the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and the State Tretyakov Gallery. The participants discussed all events scheduled for June 22 and 23: the presentation of the icons from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in the Refectory of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve; the Interregional Scientific Conference “St. Kirill Belozersky and Rare Iconography Variants” in which the best art critics of the country would take part; the exhibition of rare iconography variants in the People’s House presenting about 200 works of Old Russian art with unique iconography and extraordinary technical structure.

The Deputy Governor of the Vologda region noted, “There aren’t many examples when the State Tretyakov Gallery gives a chance to exhibit its works of art in those places where they have been created. It is a unique event. Such a practice should be introduced in a lot of regions. We are very grateful to the State Tretyakov Gallery for an opportunity to exhibit the icons in the Vologda region”.

Natalya Sheredega said that the collaboration offer of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve was accepted for a good reason – the event took place thanks to the longstanding professional ties with the museum and its high reputation in the museum community.

They discussed some issues of transportation, keeping and displaying of the rare icons. The head of the Department of Old Russian Art in the State Tretyakov Gallery elucidated the point, “Icons are tempera paintings that can be harmed if they are shaken. They are transported by a trained team in a special van in which all necessary temperature and humidity conditions are kept. Restorers examine the icons before the expedition and on arrival at the point of destination”.

The permanent museum exhibition presents only copies of the icons - their originals are displayed in the State Tretyakov Gallery. Visitors can see all articles connected with St. Kirill Belozersky that are kept in the museum holdings in the exhibition hall telling about the founder of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery.

Mikhail Sharomazov underlined at the end of the press-conference, “The icons from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery will certainly enrich perception of the museum collection. These relics are connected with the foundation of the monastery and the personality of its founder who was an outstanding individual”.

You will be able to see the icons from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve till late August. Then they will be brought back to Moscow. The participants of the press-conference have decided that cooperation will be continued as the project has a great educational and tourist potential: a lot of tourists come to the Vologda region especially to see the works of church art.
