Most active were honoured at 15th Kirillov’s Readings!

The organizers of the 15th Kirillov’s Readings received over 30 applications. Employees of the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture, research officers of the Russian Museum of Ethnography (St. Petersburg), the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Cherepovets Museum Association, the Belozersk Regional Local History Museum and the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve gave their reports on history, archeology, local studies, fine art, folklore and folk art in the conference hall of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve.

The scientific conference called “Kirillov’s Readings” has been held in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve for 15 years. It has taken place for the 15th time this year! According to I.A. Smirnov, deputy director of the museum, it has become one of the main events of the museum calendar in 2017.

Summing up results of fifteen conferences, I.A. Smirnov noted, “325 people have participated in the readings within 15 years! 190 reports have been given by employees of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, 62 – by pupils of the Kirillov, Vashki, Belozersk and Cherepovets districts. Employees of the State Russian Museum, the Russian Museum of Ethnography, the Tver State Museum-Reserve, the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Vologda Regional Picture Gallery, the Belozersk Regional Museum, the Ustyushna Local History Museum, the Vashki Local History Museum, the Cherepovets Museum Association, have presented their reports at this conference. Besides, employees of the National Park “Russian North”, the Autonomous Institution of Culture of the Vologda region “Vologdarestavratsiya” and the Club of History and Local Studies of the Vashki district library “Sources” have taken part in it. Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church were also permanent participants of the readings”.

First the conference was the ground where research officers of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve presented their works. Later when general public learnt about it, specialists of different organizations began to join in the readings. They have been annually held since 2003.

The most active participants who had read their reports almost at all 15 conferences were honoured on April 7. The diplomas for fruitful scientific work were given to the following employees of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve: A.V. Smirnova, custodian of the holdings in the Scientific and Storage Department; L.I. Glysina and E.G. Shchurina, research officers of the Scientific Department; O.G. Kuzmichyova, guide of the 1st category in the Department of Visitor Relations.

The organizers of the readings awarded O.A. Sokolova and E.A. Vinogradova, employees of the Vologda State Museum-Preserve. They also expressed gratitude to priest Alexey Mokievsky who was an active participant of the conference many times.

Pupils and teachers of the schools in Novokemsky, Kirillov and Nikolsky Torzhok reported about their researches in the second section of the conference held in the scientific library of the museum.  

The subjects of the reports amazed with their diversity! O.V. Silina (the Museum of Dionisy’s Frescoes) gave a detailed account about the peculiarities of the Deisis iconography in the frescoes of the western portal in the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral in the Ferapontov Monastery. Thanks to E.A. Vinogradova (the Vologda State Museum-Preserve), the audience learnt about the image of priest Petr Cherevkovsky in the icons of the 18th-21st centuries. The composition “Dormition of the Virgin” in the wall-painting of the western pavris of the Dormition Cathedral in Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was presented in detail by Y.V. Shemyakova (the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve) who highlighted the most interesting moments.

Karina Nazaryan (Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts) reported about the work of the Russian Orthodox Church on the preservation of monuments of the Russian North in the 19th century.

The participants of the conference spoke about the women’s headdresses of the Belozersk region in the late 19th – early 20th centuries, archeology of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and history of the Kirillov nobility; conducted a survey of pneumatic tools kept in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve; presented folk belts, silver church vessels, candlesticks made of wood, clay and metal, and benches from the museum collection.

O.V. Voronicheva, deputy director on restoration in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, reported the audience about the wooden Epiphany Church (1733) located in the village of Paltoga. This architectural monument has become a part of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve recently. The church is being restored now.

The Kirillov’s Readings is the place where you can get unique information. It is that very place where participants present their researches on which they work during a long period of time. They study the most complicated subjects and make discoveries!

Employees of regional and Russian museums, cultural and educational institutions, pupils and students usually participate in the event.

32 reports on various subjects have been presented at the 15th Kirillov’s Readings. The next conference will take place in 2018, so participants have enough time to work on some new topics and to tell about them at the 16th Kirillov’s Readings.
