Icons from State Tretyakov Gallery were presented in Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve!

23 October 2017

A service will be held near the relics of Kirillov at 16:00 every Sunday till the end of summer.

The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve organized a real holiday for visitors and parishioners of the monastery on the commemoration day of the founder of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery - St. Kirill Belozersky: the presentation of the original icons of St. Kirill Belozersky and “The Virgin Hodegetria” kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

This very image of St. Kirill Belozersky is considered to be painted during his lifetime! And “The Virgin Hodegetria” was brought by him from the Simonov Monastery when he came to our region. It guided and helped him.

Mikhail Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, opened the display in the permanent exhibition of the Refectory, “The image of St. Kirill is amazing because it emanates warmth…light… I mean that. You have such feelings looking at the relic of the State Tretyakov Gallery. Those emotions that we had yesterday placing it into the icon-case that had been made especially for this image in 1614, were unparalleled. It seems we have got used to the fact that there is a copy here, but it is absolutely different now when the original icon painted during the lifetime of the saint by Dionisy Glushitsky is located in the icon-case. St. Kirill is with us! His grandeur, wisdom and fame are with us!”

The guest of honour of the museum-reserve was Natalya Sheredega, head of the Department of Old Russian Art in the State Tretyakov Gallery. She greeted everybody and continued, “I am very happy and it is my privilege to participate in this small, but impressive exhibition the authenticity of which boggles the mind! We concluded an agreement with the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and could present our two relics that got to the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery from the Central State Restoration Workshop named after I.E. Grabar, but not in any flagrant way! We received them in the 1930s. They were restored. You know the icon “The Virgin Hodegetria” was originally decorated with a metal covering, but it was handed over to us already without it. I would also like to say that this very icon was mentioned at the conference in the State Tretyakov Gallery. I think that our cooperation will be continued and we will probably invite the icon-case of St. Kirill Belozersky to our art collection”.

Numerous guests gathered on the parvis of the Refectory in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and waited for a chance to see two relics with their own eyes. Pilgrims came to monastery to take part in the feast service on June 22 conducted by Metropolitan of Vologda and Kirillov Ignaty. They also attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition in the museum-reserve. “Dear friends, I am glad to welcome you at this display on behalf of the Vologda Metropole. It is a great joy for us that these relics have been brought here – to the Kirilov land. There are so many believers. They ask you (the metropolitan addressed the museum director) to allow them to hold a service near these icons. Let’s remember that it is not only ancient art, but also a great sacred object!” said the metropolitan.

Mikhail Sharomazov agreed with this request and said that he saw way clear to do it. A service will be held near the relics of Kirillov at 16:00 every Sunday till the end of summer.

Metropolitan of Vologda and Kirillov Ignaty thanked the director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and expressed his gratitude to the head of the Department of Old Russian Art in the State Tretyakov Gallery for collaboration.

The doors of the Refectory opened and the visitors could admire those relics that neither the monastery nor the museum had seen within several dozens of years. They piled towards the icons and looked at them for a long time. Authenticity could be felt here. Everybody inspired the different air here and knew: he or she is near the Miracle!
