Gunpowder, cannons, horses, and happy families - “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege”!

24 November 2017

From June 11 to 12, 2017

Russia Day was celebrated in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve with the Festival of Historical Reenactment “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege”. Thousands of participants come to this large-scale event for the ninth year running. The reenactment of the battle for the “Tsar’s Fortress” becomes not only a performance that people from different cities want to see, but also a meeting point – the museum-reserve has united people from dozens of various regions within the long period of the existence of the festival “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege”.

Mikhail Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, noted, “Our festival marking the six-year siege and the defense of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery during the Polish-Lithuanian invasion in 1612-1618 is timed to Russia Day this year. In June, we gather all together here to remember our ancestors, to remember thanks to whom we are free and have our Motherland!”

Two stories of the New Town fortifications and the whole fenced festival area were occupied by spectators during two days – on June 11 and 12. Even heavy rain didn’t keep people from attending the festival because they could watch everything from the fortifications. The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve turned into a real town where things were humming. Young families with kids, teenagers, people of different generations – everybody wanted to touch real history.

Spouses Dmitry and Tatiana shared their impressions, “We are from Vologda. We have come to “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege” for the third time. Every year we arrange such a family adventure for us. In summer, you should have a rest as a family and your festival is a wonderful reason to do it”.

Neither loud cannon shots, nor quick warhorses participating in the fights, nor sharp spears of dismounted tournaments could frighten young spectators. A lot of festival guests were only 2-3 years old. They went to the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve in their personal chariots.

Maria and Pavel Fursinov, who came to the festival from the village of Churovskoye in the Cherepovets district, said, “We are for the first time in Kirillov. We saw announcements in the social networking sites and on the museum website and decided to come anyhow. It is necessary to learn history from an early age…”

Two sisters from Moscow talked over each other, “Horses! Horses were the most eye-catching! Though no. Not only! It was very interesting to listen to the information about the warriors’ uniform!” It is true that it is rather interesting what the clothing of the festival participants was made of, who sewed it, how much time and efforts it took…

“A lot of time and efforts and money!” said Artyom Shabanov, member of the studio “Silhouette”. “This costume was sewn especially for the event (and he showed us his clothing). We put the finishing touches on a bus. A Swedish jacket “Wams” and knee pants, forty buttons, everything has been made by hand. Woolen cloth… linen backing cloth. A bullet pouch, a nosebag, gloves with cuffs… But why am I telling? We have our own tailor here, Sasha Kronshtadsky!”

By the way, Sasha is an engineer in real life. But here he is an excellent tailor who is sure, “The main essence of reenactment is to recapture the atmosphere of the past. We don’t design and don’t take incidental objects. We implement those that real people used to wear before”.

The members of the clubs of historical reenactment are people of different professions. There is a hairdresser, a handicraft teacher, a marketing expert, a seaman, a welder… They are united with one thing – love of history and their own country!

“You know, strength is in unification. In free, but quite spirit. And here you can feel it to the fullest extent possible”, said one of the participants of the reenactment.

The Festival of Historical Reenactment “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege” lasted for two days and was concluded with a storm of applause and cannon shots. The members of the clubs of historical reenactment from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tula, Ivanovo, Belgorod, Saransk, Nizhny Novgorod, Vologda and Cherepovets made people experience a wide range of emotions. The festival organizers - the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, the Russian Military Historical Society and the Centre of Historical Projects “Valour of Epochs” – thank everybody for participation and look forward to seeing spectators again. They will begin to prepare for the new festival very soon to greet participants and guests in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve in a year, in summer 2018.

Over 3000 people attended the Festival of Historical Reenactment “Kirillo-Belozersky Siege” that lasted for two days in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve. There were people of different generations, but mainly – families with kids. Now they prefer to study history of Russia from an early age
