Divine evening of cold summer, or Mariinsky Chorus could manage even bad weather!

The constant rain stopped at last! It wasn’t raining for just two hours. It seemed that it was afraid of interrupting those great voices that could be heard in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve on July 13. The Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre – the one that was so famous and legendary – performed on the stage of the New Town on that very day. The chorus possessing a beautiful and powerful sound and extremely rich sound palette proved once again that it was one of the world’s leading choral ensembles. Forty participants spoke with the audience in different voices blending in one. There were bass singers, tenors, sopranos, altos.

This miracle is made by conductor Andrei Petrenko who is the Honoured Art Worker of Russia. His hands are like an instrument of the soul. They breathe and all singers follow their breath. The master can be understood without words.

“The most important thing is not to deceive the audience. Spectators should leave the concert and knew that we had lived up their expectations”, thinks Andrei Petrenko, chief choir master of the Mariinsky Theatre.

They succeeded in Kirillov like in all other cities and countries (the Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre under the direction of Andrei Petrenko performed a cappella programs in the most prestigious halls of Russia, Lithuania, Finland, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain and Israel). The performance of the chorus in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve can be called ideal.

Not only residents of Kirillov listened to the world opera masterpieces in the open air. Guests from Vologda, Cherepovets, Nyuksenitsa and even Moscow went to the concert. The amused spectators shared their impressions with us, “We are so glad that we have a chance to listen to our favourite Mariinsky Chorus in Kirillov. We thank the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve for such an event! Last year we saw the performance of this choral and already knew that we would certainly go to its next concert”.

The “All-Night Vigil” composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff was performed by the chief chorus of the country very strong and soulful. We could estimate the professionals’ performance and make a conclusion whether the audience liked it or not at the end: the spectators applauded during ten minutes. They gave a standing ovation to the musicians! The Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre sang “Many Years” for the grateful viewers who thanked it loudly and sincerely.

Everybody remembered this touching performance. M.N. Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, expressed his gratitude to the chorus for this wonderful execution of the greatest masterpiece of spiritual music and gave a souvenir. We will hope that next year the Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre will please residents and guests of Kirillov with their magnificent voices again.
