Distinguished guest of Interregional Research and Practice Conference “Museum Accessible for Disabled People” Kristina Johnson visited holy places of Kirillov district

November 23, 2016

The Vologda State Museum-Preserve is hosting the conference about the issues of accessibility for disabled people from November 22 to 25. Museums of the municipal districts of the Vologda region and museums of different regions of the Northwestern Federal District are taking part in the event.

Kristina Johnson, director of the Indiana Deaf History Museum (the USA), shared her own experience of disability and arrangement of museum space for disabled people at the forum, “I was in good health till the age of 30. But then I grew deaf and got musculoskeletal problems after the past disease. I liked museums very much, but I immediately felt all obstacles for visiting them that I faced after the disease”. Deep study of the question and personal involvement into the problem help Kristina Johnson to arrange accessibility of museums for disabled people. This information is given on the website cultinfo.ru.

The Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve provides disabled people with a season ticket “Special Visitor” and they can visit all permanent and temporary exhibitions and museum events for free. Besides, since 2014, weak-sighted people have a chance for tactile sensing of the analogues of ancient arms and armour kept in the museum thanks to the club of historical reenactment “Tsar’s Stronghold”.

The visit of Kristina Johnson to Kirillov became possible thanks to Ms. Suzanne Bodoin, Public Affairs Officer in the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg.
