Day of Slavic Writing and Culture in Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve
People’s Artist of Russia M.N. Vasilieva revealed secrets of writing to the students of the Vologda Regional College of Culture and Tourism in the Monk’s cell of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve on May 24.
The Day of Slavic Writing and Culture was celebrated in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve with the lecture “History of Slavic Writing” and the master-class “Russian Historical Calligraphy”. These lessons were conducted for students of the Vologda Regional College of Culture and Tourism by People’s Artist of Russia M.N. Vasilieva.
She told the participants of the event about Cyril and Methodius, two brothers from a noble Greek family, who had become enlighteners and creators of the Slavic writing, about development stages of writing and its meaning. She demonstrated talking knots, stone hieroglyphs, clay and wax tablets, papyrus, birch bark, paper; cane, bird’s, bronze and steel quills, Indian ink and ink. Replicas of the original and facsimile editions of the ancient handwritten books were used as teaching aids. The visitors were especially interested in the book “The Ostromir Gospels” (1056). It is the oldest dated East Slavic book written in the middle of the 11th century. It is the most valuable work of Old Slavonic of the Russian version. Its facsimile edition was presented in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve.
